School-Based Programs
Join Us As We Change The World…
One Girl At A Time.
Girls Inc. delivers life-changing programs that inspire girls of all ages to be strong, smart, and bold. Research-based curricula, delivered by trained mentoring professionals and volunteers, equip girls to achieve academically; lead healthy and physically active lives; manage money; navigate media messages; and discover an interest in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. The structure of the programs is individualized to the needs of our program partners at the sites where we work, however, most program sessions run twelve weeks and meet for an hour and a half each week. Girls Inc. of San Antonio is committed to investing significantly in each girl so we strive to establish and maintain relationships with program sites that last for years. We work with each girl to reach her potential academically, physically and emotionally. For more information on how Girls Inc. can come to your school, contact Sherry Cook, Program Director, at scook@girlsincsa.org or at 210-298-5862.
Current School-Based Programs
Bold Futures Mentoring Project
Group mentoring has the potential to have a powerful impact on youth and supports a positive, safe and inclusive environment. The Girls Inc. Bold Futures Mentoring Project combines volunteer mentors, professional staff, and research-based programming to help girls ages 9-14 engage in school, build healthy relationships, and reduce risky behaviors. Girls will spend dedicated time each week in small mentoring groups with female leaders that provide them with the skills and knowledge needed to counter stereotypes and obstacles and achieve their goals.
Girls Inc. School Partnerships
School-based programs highlight three activity areas: healthy living, academic enrichment, and life skills instruction. These programs are effective because they are girls-only spaces that foster social and emotional learning in a way that an exclusively co-ed environment could not support. We work to create spaces that are physically and emotionally safe – enabling girls to share challenges and safely take risks. Through partnerships with local school districts and charter programs, Girls Inc. can provide programming to girls in-school as an extension of what is taught in the classroom.
Ways to Bring Girls Inc. into Your School
- As an introduction, Girls Inc. teaches a 10-week or semester-long course during the school day which can cover health and sexuality, or leadership skills, or other topics of interest to the school during the day. This enables girls to get to know Girls Inc. and Girls Inc. to get to know the girls – leading to future extended programming that is designed upon their interests and needs;
- Girls Inc. provides a year-long after-school or extended day program for girls, offering a rich mix of needed academic support, healthy living activities, and life skills. This programming includes field trips and special events
- Girls Inc. staff have offices at the school, and become an added support to the girls during the school day
PROJECT GOAL
To develop a supportive relationship with a group of participants to promote and improve academic achievement, healthy behaviors, social skills, goal setting, and career awareness.
WHO ARE THE MENTEES?
The Mentoring Project is designed to primarily serve 5th-8th grade girls (ages 9-14) from varying socioeconomic levels with personal and community-based risk factors.
